Description

Leaf 1a with compass viewing aperture and 32 point windrose aroung a face of the sun.

Leaf 1b vertical dial with string gnomon and weighted plummet line.

Leaf 2a with compass bowl surrounded by a horizontal dial divided to quarter hours and a pin gnomon dial indicating Italian hours.

Leaf 2b a lunar volvelle with stamped brass rotating disc, hour scales and lunar age scales, surrounded by epact scales for both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The stylized ‘4’ by the hinge is the the maker’s mark of  Melchinor Karner of Nuremburg.

Condition: Good, only the string gnomon appears to be a replacement, as is usual with these early dials. The images show the condition of the ivory, no apparent losses or repairs apart from the windrose flag and cover are missing from the side of the lower leaf, a common fault.
