Designed for the instruction of youth on using terrestrial and celestial globes: “A New Treatise on the Use of the Globes” – “An account of the figure, magnitude, and motion of the Earth; with the natural changes of its surface, caused by floods, earthquakes, etc., together with the principles of Meteorology, and Astronomy; with the theory of the tides, etc. Preceded by an extensive selection of Astronomical, and other definitions; and illustrated by a great variety of problems, questions for the examination of the student, etc., etc.

1828 ‘New Edition’ of  *A New Treatise on the Use of the Globes; or A Philosophical View of the Earth and Heavens*, by Thomas Keith (1759-1824), with six fold-out and various in-text diagrams, published by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, London, printed by A. & R. Spottiswoode, London, [first published 1811], this one is a stated ‘New Edition’ dated 1828 to the title page, size approximately 7-1/4 inches x 4-1/4 inch, with 359 pages plus a single-page publisher’s list and the fold-out diagrams.

The leather covered hardcover with gilt compartment lines to the spine, is rubbed at the edges and bumped and a little worn on the extremities, split full-length along the front spine edge with just the cord hinges holding the front cover on, the rear spine-edge is rubbed but not split through and the rear hinges are firm, no cover title, variably surface marked, otherwise reasonable for its age. Inside is complete, the endpapers are partially split at the fold, the front free-endpaper has a previous owner’s bookplate with Arms  Colonel A. H. C. Lynch of the Highland Light Infantry binding tight with pages well attached, corners not turned, pages not torn (including the fold-outs), variable age-toning or brown staining to the page edges which is greatest to the outer pages and recedes towards the pages in the middle of the book, a little occasional light pale spotting otherwise mostly clean and tidy.
