SOLD – A MID / LATE 19TH CENTURY HYGROMETER, SIGNED ON THE SCALE, ‘L. GOLAZ  A  PARIS’, CONSTRUCTD IN BRASS & ALUMINIUM.

These devices use a human or animal hair under tension. The hair is hygroscopic (tending towards retaining moisture); its length changes with humidity, and the length change may be magnified by the scale.

Hair, weight, scale & needle all intact.

L. Golaz: located in Paris at various addresses: Rue des Maçons Sorbonne, Paris; rue de la Harpe, Paris; From about 1860 to 1889 – 24 rue des fossés St Jacques, Paris. Later, after 1889, located at 282 rue St. Jacques, known as ‘L. Golaz et fils Constructeurs’, 23 Avenue de Parc de Montsouris, Paris, France.

 

THE FELT LINED CASE HAS TWO FASTENING HOOKS AND MEASURES 11.5″ x 4.5″. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF TINY SPLITS TO THE CASE BUT IT IS SECURE: WITH TWO FASTENING HOOKS.
