Description

American, mid 19th century, unsigned. The original 6 1/4″ x 3 9/16″ x 1 1/2″ red painted hinged tin carrying case has a gold wreath and a gold eagle painted on the top; the interior is painted red and has a compartment for the 8 weights (1/2 troy ounce slug and 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, & 1/2 dot). The brass beam is 4 11/16″ long overall, with 2 1/8″ diameter brass pans suspended by the original brass chains. This attractive hand balance is in very good overall condition; the tin case is also in very good overall condition, including the hinges, noting expected wear to the paint.
