Description

Offered for sale is a nice quality, 8 Day Marine Deck Watch, manufactured by The Waltham Watch Co., USA. With an all brass construction, on a Gimbled brass mount, fitted into a Mahogany Case.  The watch has a 2-1/2inch diameter, with a matt silvered dial, black enamel Arabic Numerals, blue steel hands, an 8 day “UP & ON” indicator, and a secondary seconds dial. It has a screw down bevelled glass, convex bezel cover.  To it’s reverse, is a screw down, brass, heavy counterweight back cover. When removed, a 3/4 plate lever movement is revealed. Signed “Waltham Watch Co. USA 8 Days” 15 Jewel, and a serial number 30475443. There is a Fast/Slow lever.  Fully working over the 8 days, with a top mounted brass winding wheel, which re-sets the 8 day indicator, and works soundly, losing about 1 minute per day.  There is a brass screw down locking mechanism, to deactivated the Gimble.  Contained in it’s original mahogany case, with a  lifting  glass viewing lid, wich when closed is retained by a white metal catch. There is then a secondary mahogany lid, which protects the glass lid, again retained by a white metal catch,  The case is in very good condition, with no splits dings or  bruises.  The case measures 6inch x 6 inch x 6 inch.  In o/a vg working condition, and dates to the 2nd WW C 1943.

I have been interested in scientific instruments since my grammar school days in the 1950s then university at Guys Hospital, London, where I qualified in 1961, and then working as a Dental Surgeon, until retirement from that profession, in 2004.. My antiques business was set up 45 years ago, having followed in the footsteps of my father. Throughout this time I have dealt in scientific instruments, mainly of a military connection. This includes military instruments, microscopes, compasses, Nauticalia, Telescopes, large and small, Binoculars, especially of the German and British Naval forces of the 2nd WW, general optical items and even writing cases.

I attend the Science Fair in,London, and other Antique Fairs, especially the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, West Sussex, The "Military Odyssey" at Detling, Kent, and occasionaly,the Bisley Fairs, and Birmingham, at the NMM.
