A Butterfield-type or octogonal horizontale portable sundial signed “Bernier A Paris” in brass in this original case (we cannot close it but in fine condition). According with the signature, we can date this dial around 1750/1760. 


The plate of the dial is engraved with four hour scales for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°. The plate is decorated with a light decoration engraving like a plam tree on the center. The classic gnomon has the bird-shape and is adjustable from 40° to 60°. 

The brass compass is engraved with cardinal points and a fleur-de-lys of the north. The original magnetized needle is well preserved. 


The underside of the plate bears the names of 18 of European cities.  A fine geometrical parterns are engraved on the spring of the gnomon.
