Description

A FINE CANIVET GRAPHOMETER DATED 1766 Signed: “Canivet a La Sphere a Paris 1766”

This substantial brass graphometer is 10″ (26 cm) wide, with the traditional two fixed sight vanes, two sight vanes on rotating alidade, semicircular degree scale (divided every degree and numbered in both directions), pair of verniers on the alidade (reading to five-arcminutes), inset silvered compass (with lozenge needle, 8-point rose, and degree scale), and staff mount (with universal ball joint using split clamp and fine butterfly thumb screw).

It is decorated with floral patterns and with twin pierced L-shapes as compass supporters. The North point of the compass has an engraved fleur-de-lys.

Overall condition of the instrument is fine, noting a crack in the original glass.

Jacques Canivet (w1743-1774) was at the sign of « à la Sphère » from 1747 taking the place of his cousin Lordelle. He was a scholar of Claude Langlois and from 1756 he was named “Ingegneur de l’Académie des Science de Paris”.

Louis XV order a complete set of mathematical instruments to give to Euler; he also provided several instruments to the Paris Astronomical Observatory.
