Description

A good bright brass, anodized brass and black enameled “milkbox”, student or educational model monocular microscope by Smith & Beck (serial number 2554). Housed in it’s original mahogany box with door and lock (no key), this compact microscope was a popular design in the Victorian era. Produced by many firms, some with extensive double layers of accessories (most of which were probably never used by students), this virtually unused example comes with double eyepieces, single light stop, two objectives ( 1/4 and 1/2 inch), square stage with clips and a live box. Well engineered for compactness (body tube reverses for storage), it has a 1 1/2″ mirror and 1 ” bullseye condenser. Coarse adjustment is by draw tube with a fine focusing knob to the rear. Made by one of the best firms of the era, it dates to about 1850. Near perfect mahogany case is 12 x 5 1/2 x 5″ in depth.
