Description

A very nice and rich traveling box with a scaphe sundial written in ink and bearing a tiny compass (still magnetized). The dial can be used when the needle is on the north. In this position the little peak (8 mm) seems to give the good hour.

The French scaphe dial are really rare.

This traveling and gentlemans delicate box is superbly decorated with red and gilt lacquer in the japanese-style, typical, in France (and Italy) from the period 1720/1730.

On the top of the lid we can see four little scenes in gilt : in the middle an exotic butterfly, and around a japanese forest with a exotic (fantastic) bird, a japanese temple and a japanese garden.

A rare French personnal traveling box in especially rich and genuine condition, and a rare French scaphe dial.

Diameter of the box 9,5 cm
