Description

Offered for Sale, is this high quality, British Officers, Prismatic Marching compass. Manufactured in brass, with a hinged lid, that has a glass viewing area, with a central sighting hairline, to a black japanned finish.   The main base is to a fine honey coloured brass patina, the circumference graduated to the points of the compass.   The MOP disc has a central pivot, and is graduated to the 4 points of the compass, 0-360*. The peripheral bezel rotates, and has a side mounted lockscrew. There is a glass face, with a diameter of 1-3/4 inches.  To the side is an activating/deactivating button. The hinged prismatic lens is working. There is a brass finger ring.  To the reverse, a complete anti slide ring, and inscribed .. “ER.Watts & Son/No 4758. Mk lX/  1935“. In good working order. Complete with a quality leather case, with sound stitching, tabs, buckle, and adjustable leather shoulder sling.      A compass of this quality would probably have been a private purchase, by an British Officer.

My antiques business was set up 37 years ago, having followed the footsteps of my father. Throughout this time I have dealt in scientific instruments, mainly of a military connection. This includes military instruments, microscopes, compasses, Nauticalia, Telescopes, large and small, and optical items and even writing cases.

I attend the Science Fair in,London, and other Antique Fairs, especially the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, West Sussex, The "Military Odyssey" at Detling, Kent, and occasionaly,the Bisley Fairs, and Birmingham, at the NMM.
