Description

A really rare collection of 10 microphotographic slides with the initiales “AR”.
Until recently (2007), the microphotograph slide maker “A.R.” was not perfectly identified. It’s only since the article of Stanley Warren (Initials on microphotographs – thoughts on AR, Micro Miscellanea, Summer issue, no. 66, pages 20-29) that we know without doubt that the maker was Alfred Reeves. For a complete biography with illustrated examples of Reeves’s production, see the very good article of Brian Stevenson on Microscopist.net : http://microscopist.net/ReevesA.html
In this rare collection, we can see two different kinds of labels (a decorated and a very simple), furthermore two slides bear retailer’s labels : one for Newton and Co, and a seconde one for Charles Baker.
All slides have their original label :
-The stream of life, painted by Agustus Bourier
-Dr. Johnson, rescuing Olivier Goldsmith from his landlady, contains 6 portraits
-We praise thee O Lord. Painted by Barraud
-Saturday night.Contains 20 portraits. Painted by Absolom
-Going against the stream. Painted by Jenkins
-The noble army of martyrs. Praise Thee, O lord. Painted by Le June
-Did you ring ? -Going with the stream. Painted ny Jenkins
-Sunday morning. Contains 2 portraits. Painted by Absolem.

All slides are in good condition, only two (The stream of life and Dr. Johnson, rescuing Oliver Goldsmith…) are not perfect but ok (see pictures 9 and 10).
A rare collection from a not so common slide maker.
