A very rare and early full pair of ivory denture which are preserved its two early hinged springs (see Bennion, Antique dental instrument, pages 87, pictures 93 for similar spring).

The denture is preserved in its original red morroco case lined in violet velvet.

This rare full denture can be dated from the second half of 18th century.

The thing also exceptionnal is the fact that this dentures has actually been used. As proof the tartar still present in the hollows of the teeth and on the spring. It’s a fabulous genuine condition for an used full pair of ivory denture.

Finally, the use of the denture is also indicate by a small second layer applied on the four last teeth of the left side after wear of earlier surface (see also Bennion, Antique dental instrument, pages 87, pictures 93)

This set of top and bottom dentures was for a partial edentulous. It seems that the user was still the major part of his top teeth.

The dentures were held together by springs at each angle which helped to retain them in place with an open mouth.

The springs are partially broken but still in place and entirely preserved. The ivory is in splendid condition was a nice pink patina.

A scarce denture in great condition.
