Description

A very rare planisphere used for celestial navigation, or astronavigation, and more particularly to know the time (hour) in order to know the point of the ship in the sea and to calculate its longitude.

Before the generalization of marine watches, the only methode available to navigators to know the time at sea and thus be able to determine their position and navigation was the method of lunar distances. The planisphere invented by Hue and offered for sale only by Salleron makes this methode easier to practice.

The number of Hue lunar distance planispheres commercialized by Salleron seems very low, according with the number of the present example, only “48”.

A superbe example of this rare celestial navigation map, in good original condition, complete of its tables, its booklet and its original  wooden box.

France, Paris, circa 1860 ; wood, cardboard, paper, brass ; 45×40 cm.
