A rare mid-18th century TELESCOPE by GEORGE

 

Signed “GEORGE Rue Dauphine à Paris” on the smaller tube.

Cardboard tubes, green vellum covered with gold toolings. Main tube ‘en chagrin’.

Brass eyepiece ring with dust slide, and 2 inner original rings ‘en chagrin’.

Erector with 3 lenses, mahogany fitted.

It gives clear images.

Very good condition throughout.

 

Length: open 79cm (31”); closed 29cm (11 ½”); max diam. 3.8cm (1 ½”).

 

A very rare signature; Etienne-François George (w 1745-1774) ‘Opticien de l’Académie Royale des Sciences et de la Marine’.

Very few instruments by him survived : at CNAM there are a cadran solare and a very similar telescope. Webster database list a telescope dated 1744. Ref. Marcelin (ad vocem).
