American Domestic \’A\’: Hand Sewing Machine, Serial No. 1540362, circa 1890 Manufactured by the Domestic Sewing Machine Company, Orange, Massachusetts which was established in 1864 by William A. Mack & N.S.C. Perkins in Norwalk Ohio. In the 1880\’s the Domestic Sewing Machine Co. produced two hand machines – the Little Domestic and The Reliable which in mid 1885 were renamed as the Domestic \’A\’ and Domestic \’B\’ respectively. In 1887 the base of the Domestic \’A\’ was changed to provide a larger, lower, more ornamental base adapted to sink into a treadle stand. In very good decorative condition with most of the original gilt decoration. Marked in gilt on the arm Domestic ‘A’ The slide plates with ‘NOTICE’ advice on needle sizes and list of patent dates and serial number. Note the unusual decorative cage geared hand crank with its internal toothed rim which also drives the bobbin winder, the original closed end shuttle which could baffle without the instructions, the unorthodox thread tensioner mounted on the top of the arm. Running very smoothly and stitching well, stitch size controlled by a knurled wheel on the base under the bobbin winder. Fine decorative plywood and oak cover case with logo and carrying handle. Weight 11.4 kilos
