An elegant little mid-19th-century prosthetic leg in handsomely-patinated wood with a warm glow and original leather mountings that remain in remarkable condition. Based on other prosthetics that have  past through my hands during a long career, I believe it to be a patent model for the knee joint. I feel confident about this but  the fact that it is slightly larger than most patent models  requires that I mention that it is remotely possible for it to have been a salesman’s sample or a working prosthetic leg for a child.  The carnage of the American Civil War called forth substantial innovation in prosthetic limbs, as revealed by the many patents issued in the ten years that followed it. Not many of models associated with the these prosthetic patents survive and when they do they are seldom in such marvelous condition. With the foot flat at 90 degrees and the leg fully extended the total length is 15″ or 37.5 cms.
