Description

An ophthalmic curiosity: Dr. Leon Vannier’s “Iriscope” . Vannier (1880-1963), was a major figure, if not the major figure, in French homeopathy during the last century, e.g., he founded the journal “L’Homoeopathie Francaise” in 1912 ,the “Society of Homoeopathy” in 1927 and in 1931, he opened the Homeopathic Dispensary on Boulevard Auguste Blanqui in Paris, which still exists today. In the 1920s he published “Le diagnostic des maladies par les yeux: Iriscopie et Irigraphie “(Paris: Maloine & Fils, éditeurs, 1923) in which he argued that a variety of pathologies (ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic) could be diagnosed by scanning the iris with his Iriscope. The example on offer is cased and unused with two extra bulbs. I’ve not previously owned an example of this instrument or even seen another for sale. An image of Dr. Vannier using his iriscope follows those of the instrument.
