Description C. 1795Microscope-04. One of the great classic designs of mid-eighteenth century microscope design is the “Ellis Aquatic” microscope developed in the 1750″s by John Cuff and the botanist John Ellis. This very popular design held true for more than 50 years with the format, albeit brought up to date, continuing into the 19th century. The principle design advantage is that the lens arm can be moved in two separate planes at the same time. In addition to the up and down focussing the arm can swivel from side to side allowing the user to follow the wriggling movements of aquatic organisms. In this instrument the standard Ellis format has been retained but with the significant new development to the focussing system which will greatly assist the user. In place of the overly simple push-fit focussing of the first models here a precision rack and pinion enables far greater control to be obtained for the study of specimens. There are two leiberkuhn lenses present together with an additional low power lens and a blackened screw in eye shade. The instrument is unsigned but likely to be the early work of W ” S Jones. This instrument is in very fine and complete condition. The silvering on the mirror has faded.
