A brass and silvered English portable sundial circa 1660-80,unsigned.The dial plate is engraved and part silvered,as are the two gnomons.The silvered compass bowl contains a blued steel and hexagonal brass capped needle,and is engraved simply with cardinal points.There is an adjustable scale for declination at North,adjusted via a knob outside the compass casing.One of the gnomons is engraved Robt.Copley Esq.This is probably Robert Copley,Uter barrister, admitted to Grays Inn,9th April 1666,confirmed by correspondence with Grays Inn research department recently,there is no other information regarding his legal life except his admittance to chambers.The two gnomons would appear to be fashioned for 53.5 degrees and 51.5 degrees,the latitudes of London and Doncaster,where the family estates of the Copley family were situated.It is contained in a 9 sided case (probably re-covered) with heavy brass fittings and a turnbuckle fastener which is lined with purple velvet.Bought in the North of England .The back foot on the underside of the instrument is a replacement.
