Description

Offered for sale from my own Meteorite collection is this  superb fine Allende meteorite weighing about 182 grams and measuring about 6 X 4 X 4.5 cm. Allende is a rare CV3 Carbonaceous Chondrite. Allende is the favorite meteorite of many collectors and curators. This specimen is a very fresh complete stone (182 grams) with classic fusion crust (about 75%) and the classic purple layer underneath. Enough of the meteorite is exposed to easily see the CAIs and chondrules, yet it contains a beautiful fusion crust. To hold it in your hand is to hold a part of the universe from a time before the Earth was formed!

HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF THE ALLENDE METEORITE:The Allende meteorite fell on February 8, 1969 over the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The Allende is a CV-3 carbonaceous chondrite, one of the rarest types of meteorite. Only 4% of meteorites are carbonaceous chondrites, and CV-3 is rarer still. The Allende is thought to have formed within 2 million years prior to the solar system, and was exposed to the radiation of a supernova. The meteorite contains many calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, or CAIs. These have a very unusual isotopic composition, distinct from the Earth , moon, and other meteorites. These isotope anomalies contain evidence for processes that occurred in other stars before our solar system formed!  The chondrules in Allende have been estimated to be 4.567 billion years old, which makes them the oldest known matter on Earth! Allende meteorites are 30 million years older than the Earth,  and 287 million years older than the oldest known rock on Earth! Allende is also one of the most primitive meteorites. The meteorite contains 1 mm chondrules and the larger CAIs. Unlike other meteorites, Allende almost completely lacks nickel-iron metal. The meteorite contains the rare Aluminum 26 isotope, dating its formation to within 2 million years before the solar system formed. There is nothing you can find on Earth older than an Allende meteorite!

I have been a scientific instrument collector and dealer for over twenty five years. I have a wide variety of instruments for sale, including globes, orreries, and microscopes. I also have a collection of meteorites for sale. I have a detailed knowledge of the history of many of my instruments and maintain an informational website (www.microscope-antiques.com) open to the public which, although it will include all types instruments, currently concentrates on microscopes. I am a member of the Quekett Microscopical Society and The Microscopical Society of Southern California. I have contributed numerous articles to the Journal of the latter, and have also written articles about orreries published in the Journal 'Rittenhouse,' the American Scientific Instrument Society Journal. Many other additional original articles I have written about microscopes and their history, can be found on my web site at www.microscope-antiques.com/articles.html. I have been a meteorite collector for decades and all of my meteorites are guaranteed to be absolutely authentic.
