Description

Giovanni Pomodoro

GEOMETRIA PRATTICA DICHIARATA DA GIOVANNI SCALA SOPRA LE TAVOLE DELL\’ECC.TE MATHEMATICO GIOVANNI POMODORO… TRATTE D\’EUCLIDE ET ALTRI AUTHORI…

Giovanni Martinelli, Roma

1603 (but 1599 at colophon)

First ed., second issue

Contemporary vellum.

Condition very good, noting an ink possession note on the frontispiece.

A very nice and unrestored copy. Few waterstains in some pages. Complete.

In-folio (cm. 33,5×23), cc. (57), engraved title and with 44 + 7 full-page plates illustrating drawing, surveying and military instruments and their application in field.

Besides the instruments (compass, square ruler, stiletto, gun compass, surveyor’s cross, geometric square with quadrant) the treatise depicts many surveying scenes including figures in gentlemanly or military costumes. The plates were designed by Pomodoro, who died before the work was complete and the text was provided by Giovanni Scala (1547-1600). The fame of Pomodoro’s treatise is attested by the fact that, just one year after its publication, it was cited by the architect Giorgio Vasari the Younger (1562.1625) in his manuscript Raccolta … di vari strumenti per misurare .. (Brusaporci, p. 216). This richly illustrated manual of Euclidean geometry by Pomodoro is important for its realistic representation and full description of contemporary mathematical instruments. An important introduction to 16-17th-century scientific instrumentation.

This first edition was re-issued with a new engraved title page in 1624, and then in 1667, 1691 and 1772, all using the original plates.
