The engraved silvered dial (unsigned) has the cardinal points as Nord,West,Sud,Nord and an engraved clinometer scale through 180 degrees which is read in conjunction with a retractable silvered brass rest which is housed inside the body.The outside ring is engraved in 24 divisions,12-0,0-12.The steel or iron compass needle has a central pivot in the shape of a star.It has a domed glass.The suspension houses a knurled screw in the end which should dampen the needle in transit but which required adjusting.The back of the instrument is made in shaped sheet brass secured with screws.The case,in a very dark burgundy leather,is velvet lined with gilt decoration to the rim and has a raised motif on the top surface in the shape of a star.The case is secured with two hooks and eyes and a decorative hinge.
