A good 12″ Swift-type paraffin microscope lamp with 2″ bullseye condenser, black painted square tank, enameled horseshoe base, blackened chimney, bright brass pillar, knobs and adjustment arms to condenser. Chimney has the original clear glass insert with support rod to rear, original wick to burner extending down into the tank (minor refilling chips to paint). The condenser is fully adjustable on a 45 degree arm and pivots 360 degrees around the chimney. It also swings freely and can be used by as a magnifier or reducer of light (concavo-convex lens in bright brass surround). Enameled three-legged horseshoe-type base. The whole assembly can be raised or lowered by 10″ on the square pillar with knurled screw. The original pine case (retailed by Millikin & Lawley, 165 Strand, London) is 13 x 6 1/2 x 6″ with brass carrying handle and hooks to the door. c.1880.
