The fruit of several years’ research, as often in public as in private collections, this book is an exhaustive study of the box microscope, and the first of its kind.

By examining, individually and chronologically, 22 signed or significant box microscopes dating from 1709 to 1792, as well as illustrated publications of the era, the author shows what an important role these microscopes, mostly made in France, had in the development of the technique and performance of microscopes throughout the 18th century.

As well as the discoveries made by Doctor A. Stenger about the origin, development, places of production and the makers of these box microscopes (twenty or so of whom are known today), this study also acts as a study of microscopy in the 18th century.

Finally, to show the reader the often exceptional decoration and technical aspects of these microscopes, each description is accompanied by rich photographic illustrations (over 60 in total), giving exceptional access to these often little-known instruments.

This book, edited in French and translated into English, is a new reference, indispensable to any admirer and collector interested in the history of microscopy.

Docteur Alain STENGER, HISTOIRE ILLUSTREE DU MICROSCOPE A BOITE – Illustrated History of the box microscope, Paris, Novembre 2014
