Description

Giovanni Alessandro BRAMBILLA

 Instrumentarium Chirurgicum Militare Austriacum …

 Vienna, Litteris Schmidtianis, 1782

Contemporary full-vellum binding (small damage at bottom spine). Internally clean, light foxing to text but very good copy throughout. Title on spine.

Folio (47x32cms), engraved frontispiece with dedication, (10),160 pp, 67 plates with surgical instruments engraved by F. Landerer.

A magnificent folio-work on surgical instruments, the most extensive illustrated book on the subject of its time, depicting over 600 surgical and dental instruments in their original size.

There are numerous illustrations of instruments used in trepanation, amputation, cauterization, lithotomy, ophthalmology, etc.

In the Introduction Brambilla gives a history of surgery and surgical instruments from antiquity to his own time, selecting the instruments from the best sources.

Most of the instruments were collected by Brambilla to embellish the display shelves of the Josephinum, the first medical academy in central Europe.

Three sets of instruments were made by Brambilla, exactly corresponding to the plates of the book; they are now kept at the Museo Galileo, at Vienna and at Pavia University museum.
