Description

A very solid and well made small,unsigned, pocket equatorial sundial in mahogany and brass.The compass has a paper dial,blued and gilt needle,glass and retaining bezel,all original.It is constructed of two hinged wooden leaves,the upper leaf contains the brass hour circle with a scale for Northern Latitudes and a folding spring gnomon.The lower leaf holds the latitude arm with settings for 0-90 degrees,and the compass,which has a paper dial,blued steel and gilt needle,glass and retaining bezel,all original.There are similar instruments in both Greenwich and MHS Oxford (see.Sundials at Greenwich.p.154).When not in use the latitude arm is held against the case,and the dial closed with two brass hooks and pins.circa 1850.
