Description

Rare nickel over brass container containing a Deuterium Oxide “heavy water” sample vial with contents. From the Vemork Factory in Tinn, Norway. Case marked: Norsk Hydro, Made in Norway including an embossed Norsk Hydro symbol.

Manufactured sometime between the 1935 when the plant started operation and the 1950’s when it stopped production – see National Physical laboratory example at: https://protonsforbreakfast.wordpress.com/tag/norsk-hydro/

Inner vial part full of heavy water with a yellow wax seal to vial top and surrounded by a tight fitting fibre casing. Label shows a characteristic Viking ship and is marked: Norsk Hydro Elektrisk, Kvaestofaktieselskab, Deuterium Oxyi,, D2O, 25g, 99.83g/100g, d2 1.10521.

Vemork is famous for the film “Hero’s of Telemark” in which drums of heavy water were sent to the bottom of Lake Tinn but recent sampling of sealed drums raised from the lake bed suggest the contents had a low concentration of Deuterium!
