Description

A large format (17″) mahogany framed, cased, brass octant with original trade label for Robert King of NYC. Beautiful unpolished condition, no issues except for some spidering of the primary index mirror (pencil not original). Complete history of it’s use in the whaling industry of the New Bedford area of Massachusetts c.1820. Original stepped mahogany case. Blank owners plate as there were at least 6 co-owners of the Volant (ship of whom captain Bassett was employed). Ivory scale runs out to 90 degrees. Vernier intact reading to 2 arc minutes. Three  interchangeable coloured filters (2 solar/dark, 1 green). Double primary pinnula sight and another for back sighting. A very important object of nautical history.
