Description

A  5″ ( 12.5 cm) Coddington lens (simple naturalist’s microscope) with a black enameled handle in German (nickel) silver. While most of these single ground lenses were housed in brass with natural wood or metal handles, this example employs the new alloy of nickel silver with an elaborately turned and enameled black handle. Flawless lens surfaces, 2-3 X magnification, no abrasions from abuse and having a diameter of 1 5/8″ with a thickness of 1 1/2″. A fine, early example. c. 1830-40.
