NAIRNE (Edward) et CAULLET DE VEAUMOREL (Louis), Description de la machine électrique négative et positive de M. Nairne, avec les détails et ses applications à la physique, et principalement à la médecine, Paris, Didot le jeune, 1784

8vo of  (2), XLVII, (1), 179, (1) pages and 4 folding plates ; original wrappers.

Rare French translation of Nairne’s booklet on his “patent electrical machine” with some important augmentations of which new texts and new illustrations by Caullet de Veaumorel.

Indeed, the 1783 edition of “The Description and Use of Nairne’s Patent Electrical Machine ; with the addition of some philosophical experiments and medical observations” counted only 62 pages.

The unpublished addition by Caullet de Veaumorel are :

-A long “Introduction du traducteur” (pages I to XLVII) ;

-An also long “Précis des moyens d’administrer l’électricité dans les malades, & des succès qu’on doit en attendre” (pages 90 to 135) which is an explanation of some new medical uses of the electricity based on the Mauduit and Cavallo’s books ;

-Some medical observations (pages 136 to 144) ;

-The description of the Walkirs de Saint-Amand electircal machine (pages 145 to 149) which is illustrated in the plate two ;

-And the description of the Cauller de Veaumorel electrical machine (pages 150 to 160) which is also illustrated in the plate one.

So, more than a translation of the Nairne publication, it’s a new augmented French edition with the illustrated descriptions of two new French electrical machines.

Despite some tear with lack of text, fine original condition.
