Description

A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF AN ENGLISH PORTABLE ORRERY, W & S JONES LONDON, C1800 the brass tellurian of four wheels and two pinions, with sun ball,  earth ball inscribed with circles and a pin (representing the situation of London) above tilting brass ring, silvered circle of degrees and plate showing the phases of the moon, the planetarium of brass with sun ball, the earth, six planets and fourteen satellites , the 24cm oak baseboard covered in engraved, hand coloured and varnished paper with red painted surround showing the months and houses of the Zodiac with their names, sigils and pictures, on three turned feet in oak box, with The description and use of a New Portable orrery by William Jones, 5th edition, , title with ownership signature (Mary Fludyer 1804) Preface and 50pp with diagrams in the text, Appendix and, at end (recto) [List of] Prices of the different Sorts of Orreries as made and sold by W & S Jones Provenance: Mary Fludyer (1793-1830) later Countess of Onslow
