Traube's Pleximeter

See description

Country of manufacture

Categories: Medicine, Diagnostics

A good example of Traube’s* pleximeter  with a bone body and adjustable German-silver wings, which functioned as stabilizers or handles. Before we had ultrasound  we had the pleximeter. It was laid down on the chest wall and struck with a percussing hammer; the quality of the resulting sound provided the doctor with diagnostic data. Overall condition is quite good noting some hairlines and very minor staining of the bone. Length with wings flat: 8.5 cm or 3.5″.  A very similar pleximeter is shown in Bennion’s ANTIQUE MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS( 1979:194).
*Dr. Ludwig Traube, 1828-76, sometimes described as the father of experimental pathology.
