Description
A rare survivor. Lovering’s “Joosi” distance and bearing finder by Robert Nicholl c.1890 with full instruction label including price, address, recommendations and serial number (311). Constructed of a plain, bevelled boxwood rule surmounted by a brass bar to allow sliding action of a scissor-like arm with celluloid protractor (0-180 degrees) with indicator pointer. Apparently, an easy to use apparatus for use to determine distance to any ship and to bring that ship abeam, and then safely pass. To overlay on a navigational chart in a quick attempt to avoid harbour traffic. In stained pine or cedar case with both hooks intact. Small chip to upper right corner of wooden rule. Case measures 19 x 8 x 2″. Robert Nicholl was in business from 1885-1901.
