A good late 19th century telescope with a mahogany box and table tripod, signed ' J.H. Steward, 456, 66, 406 Strand, 54 Cornhill, London, Maker'. The telescopehas a main lens of 2.5", a diamond pattern leather covered taper barrel, five nickel draws with brass fittings and a pancratic eye-piece. The nickel tubes make the telescope very light for seperate usage from the stand if required. The telescope measures 40.5" fully extended and 12.5" closed. The optics are in excellent condition, no chips or scratches. The brass tripod measures 17" high and is signed 'J.H. Steward, 405 Strand, London'. The case 13.5" x 8.25" and 4.5" deep with a carrying handle, escutcheon plate, lock (no key) and 2 fastening clips. It contains a high power astronomical eye-piece witha dark cover. The condition throughout is very good. J.H. Steward was a prolific manufacturer and retailer of all types of quality instruments. |
