Description

This very attractive instrument is signed simply Elliott, 268 High Holborn, indicating it was made by William Elliot between 1835 and 1849.  The business was established as Elliott and Sons by 1850, later becoming Elliott Brothers. As a miners dial, it is a simple form, but the workmanship is excellent.  The brass compass lid is engraved as a clinometer, as is common with the earlier miner’s dials.

This instrument has been completely repolished and relacquered, and displays very well. The figured mahogany case is of unusually good quality.  Please note the following.  Brass compass would originally have been silvered.    The large screws that secure the sights are probably replacements.  There would originally have been three tripod tips included in the case.  Diameter of compass housing 5.8 inches.  Ganymede stock No. 35-3749
