Description
On the front are two scales showing the days of the week accompanied by their astronomical symbols. The first, called “Die Neüe Zeit” (the new days), corresponds to the days written in full with a window on the outside of the disc. The second, called ‘Die Alte Zeit’ (the previous days), corresponds to the days written in abbreviated form with a window inside the disc. Between these two scales is a relief interlacing decoration and a rhombus frieze around the edge. The graduations of the scales are engraved on the central disc.
On the back is a disc with two windows, five scales and a superb interlaced relief decoration. The different scales, from the periphery to the centre, are as follows: ‘unbewegliche Tag’ (main fixed holidays), ‘Sonnen lauf’ with signs of the zodiac (the sun’s course through the zodiac), ‘Monat des Jahrs’ (months of the year), ‘Tag lang’ (length of the day) and ‘Sonen aufgang’ (sunrise). Opposite these last two scales are ‘Nacht lang’ (length of the night) and ‘Sonen untergang’ (sunset). In the centre is a rosette.
Diameter of 4.9 cm
Made in Germany at the second half of the 18th century.
