Description

The French sector was the quintessential mathematical and engineering instrument of the 17th and 18th centuries.

This particular model is an early design, very beautifully engraved by Sevin.

It features six scales: equal parts, areas, polygons, chords, solids, and metals, along with a short additional scale bearing only the symbol for Mars—a circle and an arrow—representing iron (specifically, the weight of iron cannonballs).
