A boxwood diptych dial with string gnomon manufactured for between 32 and 34 degrees. The gnomon is not adjustable and has never been altered. It is signed Doublit,London,in stamped capitals on the dial reading face. This is probably Thomas and Henry Doublit who worked between 1842 and 1913.The numerals are also finely stamped and black filled. The compass dial is paper and has a blued steel needle with capstan boss and gilt N and S.A pin to the face dampens the needle for transit when the dial is closed via a lever which raises the needle to the glass. The glass is original as is the turned brass retaining bezel.A clawed brass lever to the side of the case engages with a pin to hold the dial open at the correct angle. The case is held closed with two brass hooks and pins. The hinge is let in to the base and lid and through pinned.
