Description

A Butterfield-type or octogonal horizontal portable sundial in brass signed “Menant A Paris”. The sundial is datable around 1740. 

 

The plate of the dial is engraved with four hour scales for latitudes 40e, 45e, 49e and 52e. The classic gnomon has the bird-shape and is adjustable from 40° to 60°. 

The compass is engraved with the cardinal points and a fleur-de-lys fot the magnetic declinaison. The original magnetized needle is well preserved. 

The underside of the plate bears the names of 24 cities. 

The sundial is of good size measuring 75 × 65 mm. No case.
