Description
A c1920s contraceptive sponge in its orginal tin (diameter of tin= 1.75″). It was sold as a “Sanitary Health Sponge” because promoting it as a birth-control device would have violated the then-current law regarding what could be shipped through the mails. It was inserted into the vagina before intercourse and then washed out and reused. The marine sponge was held in cotton netting with a string attached to aid in its extraction.
