We have obtained a collection of original watercolor drawings, done to record a variety of ophthalmic pathologies. They range from a group done at Hamblins in the 1920s( the bulk of the collection)  to those done at London University’s Institute of Ophthalmology by Terrence Tarrant in the 1970s. There are also a couple of c1930 Curry  Paxton drawings. The Tarrant drawings are all of the fundus, the others depict various ophthalmic pathologies such as congenital cataracts, siderosis, etc. Some of the drawings  were executed for notable British ophthalmic surgeons, including Sir William Lister and W.S. Duke-Elder. Apart from Tarrant, who signed his name in full, there are a number of other artists who signed their drawings only with their initials, e.g., “T.H.”, likely Thomas Hooper.Several are done by “A.P.” ,who we haven’t as yet identified.The cards on which the drawings are done are 10″ x 7″ ( 25 cm x 17.5 cm), with some variation. In the last 30 years the camera has replaced these very skilled artists. There is  a video on YouTube of an interview done by Richard Keeler with Terence Tarrant that is very much worth watching. Tarrant discusses his career, including his apprenticeship, and how the drawings were executed. A link to it follows.
