Description
SOLD – An exceptional large marine telescope signed, ‘Dollond, London’, undoubtedly commissioned for someone special. It measures 37.5 inches ( 95 cms ) closed and 45 inches ( 114 cms ) with the single draw fully drawn.
The lens cap, front and rear collars and eye-cup are finished in silver plate. The draw tube is nickel silver.
It has a crown / flint 2 inch achromatic lens.
The taper barrel is constructed in polished Honduras mahogany.
There are no cracks, chips, dents anywhere though there a are a few little nicks / scratches to the barrel ………….. very clean and a fine example.
The mahogany case has a couple of knocks to the corners but there are no cracks. An escutcheon is missing from the centre of the lid. There are two fastening hooks and the lock is present ( no key ).
It gives excellent images when viewed through.
Telescopes like these were usually commissioned for someone of importance or as a presentation piece.
