A Swift “Dick” Petrological Microscope, c.1891, English, signed to foot ‘J Swift & Son, London’, standing on large cast brass foot finished in lacquered and oxidised brass, trunnions at top support the body, with a large plano-concave mirror on gimbal below the substage, the substage assembly with rotating Nicol prism on fold out arm, an iris diaphragm and focusing condenser all on rotating divided circle for angular measurement, square stage with a Swift 2″ patent stage and slide clips in the case lid, the main body to the rear of stage incorporating the ‘Dick’ rotating mechanism with fine focus via screw and course focusing via diagonal rack work, the body tube incorporating a sliding plate with wheel of apertures and slide in/out Bertrand lens, to top a rotating and folding analyser engraved with 45 degree positions, complete with three Swift objectives, an eyepiece in the original mahogany case. With two signed copies on petrology belonging to the original owner Dr. P. A. Sabine.


Provenance: from the estate sale of P.A. Sabine, Dr of Geology, Sabine’s specialist subject was Petrology, and he was a former Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the British Geological Survey
