A three-legged dividers in brass and steel, with the third arm removeable, used to transfer onto a map the positions of places taken on a globe, by measuring the distances between three points or also it was also used to reproduce drawings or maps to scale.
The present example is not signed, but certainly French, mid-19th century. It measures 16,5cm lenght, so it is of good size.
Two steel points are shorter than 1 millimeter, otherwise excellent condition.
