An item that would repay research: the inscription reads “The Pater[?] (E.W.L. Ryves) with 6 1/2 inch Reflecting Equatorial at Croft Lodge, Thornton Heath, about 1877”. E.W.L.Ryves was the father of P.M.Ryves, a director of the British Astronomical Association Mars section from 1942–1956. P.M.Ryves was an active member of the association and he exhibited some of his fathers astronomical drawings at a wartime BAA Exhibition meeting; he was also discoverer of Ryves Comet, also known as C/1931 P1, 1931 E or 1931c.
The print is mounted on board (overall dimensions 210 x 135 mm), with two other unrelated photographs. The condition is good, noting only a small scuff to the surface of the photograph – this is located to the right-hand side and can be clearly seen in the image appended to this listing.
