Description

A splendid and historical (with important French provenance) forged steel gunner dividers or caliper of very large size and exuberant decoration.

This impressive gunner level is built with two large pieces of steel deeply and richly engraved. Its measures 24,5×14,8cm and weighs 700 grammes.

It was the number 5 of the important Roussel scientific collection (see the last picture showing the Roussel catalogue illustrating this dividers).

The catalogue describs the dividers as French from the 16th century with Renaissance decoration. Today, for sure, we know that this instrument, as some others, was made for Roussel himself during the second half of 19th century.

Anyway, the quality of the steel and the engraving made of this piece, an exceptionnal and historical piece in the history of scientific instrument.
