For sale is this Thomas Walker of Birmingham, England Cherub Mk. III ship’s towed log complete with taff rail mounted display of miles covered. Believed to date from around 1890 this log has been used and shows some small blemishes on the fins. When in use the rotator would be streamed astern of the ship using around 60 yards of heavy rope as shown in the photos. The twisting of the rotator eventually twists the fitting on the back of the display which is mounted on the stern of the ship, and this then turns the dials on the display to record how many miles the ship has travelled. On a daily basis at noon, the readout would be noted and added into the ship’s log book as a permanent record of the distance covered in the last 24 hours. These towed logs remained in use until technology overtook and satellite navigation became the way forward. This Cherub log is nicely presented but the wood at the foot of the display is split and one of the wooden support brackets has become detached, but these can easily be repaired. After all, you want the equipment which intact, rather than the display stand Worth over £1,000 but priced to sell Will ship worldwide using an insured delivery service
