Title: ‘Babbage’s Calculating Engine’, in the Saturday Magazine, No. 552, 6 February 1841
Publisher: John W. Parker, London
Description: 4to; pp. [49–88]. SCARCE ‘MONTHLY PART’ IN ORIGINAL WRAPS, CONTAINS ONE OF THE FEW ACCOUNTS OF BABBAGE’S DIFFERENCE ENGINE PUBLISHED DURING HIS LIFETIME. (Origins of Cyberspace 59.) This important account, anonymously written, came just one year before the government withdrew his funding – it offers an account of the history, mechanism and (unfinished) state of the Difference Engine, and features one diagram. This is Part III of the feature ‘Calculating Machines’ but is the only part on Babbage’s invention and is complete in itself. Scarce in this state: on offer is the ‘Monthly Part’ in original wraps, containing the four issues for February 1841. Good to very good condition: wraps with mild spotting to front cover; original stitched binding strong; worn for the lower 1cm of the folded spine; internally very good throughout; uncut; very mild spotting, barely affecting text (see photos).
