Description
A nice and complete set of topping tool/gearing cutting collets, cutters and spindles. Although the maker’s name is obscured on the lid, most were attributed to Carpano and an internet search shows similar red card, cased examples. Topping tools/gear cutters were often used by watch and clock makers in Victorian times for custom replacement or manufacture but now the worn parts are simply purchased outright. A rare survivor from a dying mechanical art form. Case measures 8 1/2 x 5 x 1 inches and is scuffed but all hooks and hinges are intact. The last photo shows the topping wheel needed to cut the gears from brass blanks. (have one here if you want to purchase it and pay the postage)-weighs 10 kg (22 pounds).
