Peter Dollond was an 18th-century English optician born in London in 1730. He was the son of John Dollond, who was a well-known optician and the inventor of the achromatic lens. Peter Dollond was trained in his father’s business, and together they expanded the family’s optics company.
In 1752, Peter Dollond, along with his father, was granted a patent for an improved version of the achromatic lens, which greatly improved the quality of telescopes and microscopes. This invention revolutionized the field of optics and made the Dollond family famous throughout Europe.
Peter Dollond also worked on the development of the dividing engine, a precision instrument used to make accurate marks on scientific instruments, which was crucial for the production of finely tuned optics.
In addition to his work in optics, Peter Dollond was a Fellow of the Royal Society and was appointed optician to the King in 1761. He was also an active member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Peter Dollond died in London in 1820, having played a significant role in the development of optical instruments and the advancement of scientific knowledge during his lifetime.
